Acupuncture
What Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a time-tested healing practice that uses fine needles to activate the body’s own systems for repair, relief, and balance.
How Does It Work?
Acupuncture points are areas on the body that influence nerves, circulation, and internal function. When these points are stimulated with a needle, they send signals through the nervous system to help regulate pain perception, inflammation, hormone levels, and emotional states.
The Gate Control Theory
The spinal cord acts like a gate that controls whether pain signals from the body reach the brain. Acupuncture stimulates nearby nerve fibers, which helps close the gate to pain. This reduces how much discomfort your brain registers. It's a principle known in neurology as the Gate Control Theory of Pain.
The Endorphin Theory
Acupuncture triggers the release of endorphins (natural chemicals) that help relieve pain and boost a sense of well-being. It’s similar to how the body responds to exercise, but instead of running a mile, you get to rest and let your nervous system reset itself.
What Does Acupuncture Feel Like?
Most people describe the sensation as minimal. It's often just a light tap or pressure. Some points create a heavy, warm, or tingly feeling. The process is calming, and many patients report entering a deep state of rest or even sleep during treatment.
